Painting 4 Ornaments in 24 Hours
This may sound easy, but with minimal "daylight" it's pretty hard, especially when paint needs to dry!
Hello Hello!
So nice to sea ya, I’ve genuinely missed my regular posting here! Equally I am so thankful for all of the orders I’ve been packing up lately for my shop, and that I’ve been able to go out and do some “Christmas-y” things. 🙂
Normally around here I talk about my sketchbook but last month I painted 4 ornaments in 24 Hours, and I took some behind the scenes pics so I kinda want to share it with you!
This year one of my goals has been to make more tangible art. Hence why I truly got into my sketchbook this year, and I’ve actually painted more original art. Which really spurred from me enjoying painting Christmas ornaments last year so while this year I was short on time I decided to make it happen.
I gave myself pretty much 24 hours to get them done so I could get photos and then release them.
Basically it went against my past methods. Usually I work on them slowly, I plans days of promo to let people know they exist but this year life was not letting that level of organization work so I just made the most of it.
Looking back on it now a few weeks removed, I actually think it resulted in some of my favorite art, and I learned new things too! So it was a successful in my eyes, even if they are still in my shop waiting for their perfect home.
Now let’s take a peek at how it all came together!

Turns out 24 Hours isn’t long in the “winter” ( I know its fall by definition but we are talking lighting) if you only like painting in natural light, especially when you have to account for dry time!
I actually had the intention of painting 5 (which is why you see 5 on the Easel) but once I finished the 4th one I was running out of light and I needed photos! But before we get to that let’s see how the others came together!

Somehow I did get 4 ornaments painted all inspired by moments by the ocean and I kinda loved how they came out!
Often times when I’m painting I need time for them to grow on me, but something was in the air, or maybe it was just the right painting playlist, I don’t know but it was just working!
I think from this I learned once again, thinking never helps if you already have the idea. Sometimes you just gotta go for it and possibly a 24 hour deadline helps! 😂
It was actually a really fun experience, and like I said it’s now some of my favorite work that I’ve created.
This isn’t where the whole thing ended though! Next up was to get to the beach for photos. (Yes, beachy ornaments need beach photos in my ideal world)
I made it to the park, but the photos were no good, BUT thankfully the next morning (release day) I had good natural light so I got studio pictures!
Inspired by lovely moments by the sea perfect for ocean lovers.
These ornaments were so fun to make and I love them! Was it a great “release” no, but I know that sometimes original art takes awhile to find its perfect home, and that’s ok.
I think we often see artists release things and instantly sell out which is amazing. That doesn’t always happen, in fact I think more often than not it doesn’t.
Hopefully that day will come, but I think you have to remember that it’s ok. Sure sometimes I go into self destruct mode when a “release” doesn’t go as imagined. But I truly feel like even if these paintings stay with me, they renewed my love of painting ocean-scapes!
Not that, that love had gone, because it hadn’t… But I was starting to overthink original work and was feeling a bit down about it. Yet these were SO fun, and just made me want to keep painting! So it was a win!
Also I will certainly be using that painting playlist again!🙂
Do you have a favorite one? Also if you are also an artist have you had this sort of experience before?
Sea Ya Next Time!
~Sarah
