đ¨Week 1 of Getting Back To Daily Sketchbook Time
Via my own made up Sketchtober with very minimal rules beyond making time to do something in my sketchbook daily!
Hello Hello!
Itâs officially time to share the first week of my Daily Sketching (aka Sketchtober because itâs more fun to have a name)?
Now this technically started on the first so this weekâs version will be a bit shorter than future ones! đ
In case you missed my last post about this here is a quick summaryâŚ.
Last month I was SUPER busy and one of the first things to âgoâ was my daily sketchbook time! So since this is the MONTH of all Challenges, I thought why not try to get back in my sketchbook daily and share it here on Substack?
So thatâs what Iâm doing with daily check ins and then a written post each Sunday as a full look at the week! đ
Iâm not particularly following a prompt list but if I find myself not knowing what to do Iâm liking the looks of Peachtober, and Mosstober lists for ideas!
â¨Day 1

I decided to go ahead and pull from the Peachtober list today because it was acorn and ideas started brewing! Unfortunately my first idea which was most me flopped, but I decided to try again and it started with a trip to the backyard!
I visited our Southern Live Oak tree to take a peek at what the squirrels were chattering about loudly the other day when I went to water some flowers!
There were lots of empty acorn hats on the tree..
Wait, what do you call those?
Anywhoooo, presumably those have now been hidden and tucked away by our squirrel friends, but there were still a few low enough for me to see and take photos of! đ
So, because I donât love working with Dark Colors I went with the green one!
I donât LOVE how it turned out, but I was working with a limited color palette (aka whatever dry mediums that were on my desk)⌠But Iâm sure with time it will grow on me! It was kinda fun getting to reference what was out back! đ
â¨Day 2
I said I wasnât following a prompt list this month but here I am pulling from the Peachtober list again! đ Itâs Kite, and I kind loved the idea of doing a Swallowtail Kite. Which is you donât know what that is, its a bird common in Florida.
Once again I didnât have time to work in the morning, and I actually had lots of errands so I was hoping I would see one flying about!
Unfortunately I did not⌠đ Then by the time I got home I was loosing daylight so I pivoted! I decided to imagine I was on a1a, and you could spot some kites over the dunes since they are a common site out our beaches. I then of course had to make it ocean-y. So the kite is a Jellyfish!
I was playing with various mediums, and I learned that itâs kinda hard to make straight smooth lines with the fountain pen without changing the direction of my sketchbook. (Hence the weird string.) I also learned that markers on top of the fountain pen makes the pen bleed into the color. Whoops! Then I also tried to layer colored pencils on top of Neo colors and that didnât work super well! Oh well!
I learned some new things, and for like 10 minutes max piece Iâm ok with it!
â¨Day 3
A busy day! It was EllieđŚ Food making day! (EllieđŚ is our Dog!) As well as a major computer work day! I did release day prep all day, because at 8 pm I released some new original art! If you want to go check them out here are the still life pieces, and the landscape/oceanscape ones!
The prompt for Peachtober was slug and I loved the idea of doing a sea slug, AKA a nudibranch, but I think my brain was too overwhelmed to take on such a prompt that I wanted to do really well! So I just decided to doodle Ellieâs day for something different.
Drawing your dogs day may seem weird, because it probably is, but it was an extra nice day for her so thought I would document it. Tho the doodles were not going well. So Iâm going to skip sharing them. Some days are just like that, and that ok!
â¨Day 4
This day was a little different, so I actually did some iPad work! Iâm still trying to get my new iPad to feel comfy, and idk there is just something about the way the pencil moves over the screen that doesnât feel right, but I guess it still needs âbroken-inâ? Is that a thing for new tech?
So to do something that would redeem myself from my floppy attempt on my iPad I pulled from PeachTober once again, with gingham!
I grabbed 2 Mildliners and made a lil patterns, and honestly I like it. The colors feel super me, and sure itâs wonky, but Iâm thinking I could recreate it on my iPad, and maybe paint something on top and make a cute lil spring design? (Itâs crazy to be thinking Valentines + Spring at the moment but alas here I am doing so!)
â¨Week Recapâ¨
Iâm not sure what I am doing with Sunday, I think maybe it will just go on next weeks post?
I kinda feel like Sunday officially starts a new week, but equally I feel like itâs a no week day.
Like itâs the reset, and then Monday is the fresh start? I donât know but the Mosstober prompt is Tide Pool and I LOVE a tide pool soooo!
Overall Iâm so happy with the consistency this week, the art may have not been the best, but thatâs ok! I actually think some of the concepts here may appear again in my work and I think thatâs the biggest thing Iâve learned from sketch booking.
You might do something you donât like, or thatâs not your vibe, blah blah blah, but later on it may just lead to a great idea.
Moral of the story, sketchbook books donât have to be a masterpiece, and thatâs actually the point. A place to be messy, and chaotic and try out new things. You never know where it will lead! â¨
Sea Ya Next Sunday!
